Warning: Whining and Complaining Ahead

Sigh.

We were really hoping to go on a vacation this year. We wanted to go to Boston because I’ve never been there, but I don’t think it’s going to work out.

Sigh.

With Ducks doing the internship this summer rather than going back to his previous job, we’re not going to have the discretionary funds available for a big trip, and airfare to Boston is just too expensive (it’s sucky living in a city that pretty much only does connecting flights, thus tremendously increasingly travel costs). Of course, we’re really thankful for the internship and we know it will pay off in the long run, but it’s not as much money as he would have otherwise been making this summer.

I’m trying not to get depressed because I really wanted to take a vacation this year, but it’s hard! We’ve also got several weddings coming up, which will mean mini-trips and bridesmaid/groomsman expenses and gifts, etc., etc. And, we did buy the new bed, which was actually none of the pictures that I showed you. Of course, when we went shopping again, we decided we loved a competely different one (will post more on this later).

So, long story short … law school means delaying fun. This is one reason why I really want to wait to have kids until at least two or three years after law school (when I’ll be in my 30s….wow), because I want to have some time to have fun and be able to do things. I hate the feeling of just delaying and delaying. Before law school, we did have the most wonderful honeymoon, and then we went to Chicago last summer, but there are so many other trips I want to take.

Sigh.

I guess I’ll just leave the vacation fund alone and let it continue to slowly accrue money. At least, maybe, when we finally get to the end of law school, we can go on an awesome celebratory trip.

Sorry for sounding so whiny and spoiled! I feel like a brat complaining about not being able to go on vacation when there are so many other more important issues going on in the world.

But still, any ideas on what we could do to spend a couple of days having fun economically?

  1. YIkes, that’s such a bummer 😦 The whole putting-things-on-hold stuff is always hard :(. I”m sorry.

  2. We are always on a tight budget too. I recommend doing a night or two at a somewhat local inn or B&B and treat yourself to quality time and good food. We enjoy that!

  3. Hear, hear. Yes to the blah of no vacation and then to feeling like a brat because I am complaining about it… that’s exactly how I’ve felt lately. I think saving away for a big hurrah after law school graduation is a great idea, though! Is there any way you could incorporate a mini-trip into the weddings you’re attending?

    • Yes, you understand me perfectly. Are y’all going to be able to do anything fun? One of the weddings is about three hours from here, so we could maybe go to the beach the next day or something.

  4. We recently spent a weekday in Austin and only spent$46 . Austin has so many pretty public outdoor spaces that you can enjoy. Wherever you think you might go, my suggestion is to sign up for Groupon emails for that city. A lot of times they are for B&Bs and restaurants that you might not indulge in in your own town, but they are perfect for a get away.

    • Smart thinking – I have Groupon on my phone, but I have only ever bought one (the one for the trainer). I should be braver and venture out more. My husband has been talking about going on a nature trip in the Hill Country, so that might be a good and cheap outdoor option.

  5. We all deserve vacations. I try to ensure I take mine as often as possible.

How about a staycation? We did that for a weekend and pretended to be tourists and it was fun! Perhaps you could housesit for someone nearby?

  6. not whining! i totally feel ya. i didn’t take a trip in law school because i didn’t have the time. now we haven’t taken one because we don’t have the money. i think travel is necessary to stay sane!

    • Yeah, I bet it’s even harder for couples like you guys (and Kate from MD Like Me), because you both were doing professional school at the same time. Hopefully you get a nice vacation and break sometime soon as well!

  7. I almost wrote this post a few days ago…. Seriously. We were going to plan a trip for after finals because I got a reasonably well paying job this summer, but then we realized that was really not a financially prudent thing to do, and if we’re going to spend $ to go anywhere, it really should be to see our families who we never see, oh wait we were just there over Christmas and really don’t want to go back until the holidays. Hence no vacation in May.

Over spring break, we did a staycation. M took a couple of days off work, which was nice. We mostly used the time to get things done, but we also lounged around and watched movies. In warm weather, we also try to do a lot of day trips (kind of easy on the east coast, I don’t know about Texas). I mean we’re still spending $ on gas and usually an activity, but I pack picnic lunches and it’s not like we’re spending the day in midtown Manhattan, so they’re really not huge expenditures. Sometimes we will go see the sight of a really famous battle (I guess this only works because we’re both nerds?) or splurge on a day of fishing/rafting/something of that nature.

But yeah, the law school delaying things sucks very, very much. I don’t think we’re brats, I think we’re just people who work hard and are ready for the payoff :-/

    • I guess we law school couples are all kind of running on the same tracks – getting burnt out on routine, but not having a lot of room to do anything about it. We should think about doing a house swap or something next summer! πŸ™‚

BUT, more importantly, you got a summer job!??!?! How awesome!!!! πŸ™‚ Details!

  8. Oh sweetie, believe me, I know how you feel! We got married when we were BOTH in school (I know, I know), so, we had a honeymoon and that was IT. We never vacationed or did anything beyond that because during spring break I worked and over the summer we were working or in internships. My husband graduated two years ago and we’ve been tight on cash, so we haven’t done any big vacations yet, but, we’re hoping for fall of this year.
In terms of economical vacations, why don’t y’all try to find a nice little condo in Galveston or a place on Lake Travis for a few days? That’s our favorite little vacation type thing we can do.

    • Okay….that makes me feel better. Like I wrote to Christy, I have been overlooking all the wonderful things Texas has to offer. You guys are so smart!

Where are you thinking you might go for your trip this fall? πŸ™‚

  9. Sorry, girl, but I know what you mean. I was hoping to use my PTO for a little vacation later this summer, but it looks like I’ll be having my tonsils out instead. Sucks!

You guys should spend some time in Hill Country. Go to Gruene or to some wineries out there. Also, Mandola’s winery between Austin and SM is really cool for an evening out. We spend a lot of time in NB because my parents have a condo there and we always have fun driving around the hills.

  10. ah boo! But the good news is that there’s something more incredible to do when you can πŸ™‚ Local and fun? I’m a big fan of getting just far enough out of town to feel like I’ve really gone somewhere… I did that when I went to Fredricksburg a couple of weekends ago and saw a killer show at Luckenbach… B&B, wine tours, a cool river to jump in close by, and a chill & laid back afternoon with the roosters & a cold brew at old Luckenbach is fantastic!

    • Good suggestions – I get too caught up in what other people will think to actually take time and enjoy myself. I’ve been wondering if people at work will judge me if we only go right down the road for a trip. But, if I worry about that, I’m going to miss out on the fun we could have right here!

  11. So sorry! Hang in there and let those $$$ accrue. If it makes you feel better, it’ll be a LONG time until Hubs and I go on a vacation because we have a baby now. πŸ™‚ My suggestions for local, inexpensive fun: stay in Gruene at the Mansion, go shopping at Cabela’s in Buda and the Outlets at San Marcos, and take your hubby to the Shiner Brewery. πŸ™‚

Have you looked into Groupons or other similar sites for getaways near by? You could do a night at a B and B for example

    • That’s a good idea! I deleted my Groupon app because it stressed me out to get the push notifications (weird, I know), but now would be a great time to add it back and start looking for deals! πŸ™‚
